Heavy metals are defined as any metallic element that has relatively high density, and is toxic or poisonous at low concentrations. The adverse effects of heavy metals on human health have been studied extensively, yet exposure still occurs. Ingestion is the most common method of poisoning, therefore it is extremely important to limit our exposure through food and nutraceutical consumption. The consumer trend towards health conscious diets and the increasing demand for transparency in product labeling requires reliable and reproducible testing to ensure that the products we are consuming do not contain these harmful components.
We highlight the metals that are most commonly tested for below, and the primary exposure mediums by which contamination can occur.
